Dehydration can cause serious health problems
When you’re really thirsty, you’ve probably noticed that you don’t feel great. Sometimes you might have a headache, other times you might just feel a bit tired and dizzy, either way, you’ve probably guessed that being low on H2O isn’t great news for your body. As well as causing temporary problems, dehydration can create serious long term health issues. If you go without water on a regular basis it could make you ill and you may be setting yourself up for poor health in the future.
Causes of dehydration
The most common reason for people to be dehydrated is not drinking enough liquid. A lot of people forget to drink throughout the day and so their H2O levels gradually drop until they begin to feel unwell. In other cases, people can become dehydrated because they have diarrhoea or have been vomiting. A high temperature can cause people to become dehydrated as can excessive sweating and increased urination.
Signs of dehydration
Aside from feeling thirsty, one of the main signs of dehydration is dark coloured urine. If you notice your urine is darker than normal when you go to the toilet, it probably means you need to start drinking more H2O. Dehydration can also make you feel tired and you may find your mouth is dryer than normal. If you notice any of these signs, try drinking a few glasses of water over the next hour or two to see if they disappear.
In the short term, severe dehydration can lead to heat injury. This is more likely if you’re out playing in the sun or exercising vigorously on a warm day. Heat injuries can cause you to experience cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
If your electrolytes are out of balance – a common result of dehydration – it can lead to seizures and involuntary muscle contractions. A lack of H2O can also cause a drop in blood pressure, something that can be very serious. These can all be potentially dangerous, so make sure you avoid them by drinking plenty of water.
In the long term, dehydration can cause urinary and kidney problems. Urinary tract infections are more common in people who are regularly dehydrated as are kidney stones and even kidney failure.
How to stay hydrated
The best way to ensure you’re properly hydrated is to drink water regularly throughout the day. Try to drink before you feel thirsty to make sure your H2O levels are topped up. If you’re out exercising or if the weather is warm, you’ll need to drink more to stay healthy.
