Back to School - New Year, New Term Checklist

With Christmas done and dusted for another year, it’s time to dig out the uniforms from the back of the wardrobe, polish up the smart shoes and go back to school. To help you, and your young scholars, get ready for the new school term, here’s our checklist of the essential things you’ll need for the cold, dark January term.

Warm coat

January is often one of the coldest months of the year in the UK, with snow and icy weather common across many parts of the country. Even when the mercury rises above zero, it’s often wet, rainy and miserable outside. To help keep your kids cosy in the new term, invest in a warm, water resistant coat. It’s well worth spending as much as you can in a warm coat as a good quality jacket will last your child years.

Winter woollies

Warm winter woollies are the perfect accompaniment to a brand new coat. If your kids have lost their hats and gloves from last term, now’s the time to invest in a new set. Take your kids shopping with you so they can pick their favourite design, otherwise there are likely to be sartorial disagreements when it’s time to go back to school.

Waterproof shoes

Waterlogged pavements can quickly lead to waterlogged shoes. Your kids will hate sitting in school all day with cold feet, so make sure the shoes you buy for the new school term are as waterproof as possible.

Water Bottles

If you began teaching your children about the benefits of hydration last term, carry on your good work by investing in a brand new water bottle for the new term. As well as helping your child to concentrate in lessons, good hydration with help their development and enable them to achieve their full potential in the classroom.

Specialist equipment

A lot of mock and real exams take place in the January term. Depending on the age of your child, there’s a chance they’ll be sitting some tests when they go back to school. If they are, they may well need specialist equipment like calculators, tablet computers or geometry tools. Check with your school to find out more.

If you can get a copy of your child’s new timetable in advance, it will help you to plan your routine and ensure your child has got everything they need for the school day. Ask your school, or fellow parents, if a copy is available and get yourself organised before the new term even begins.
